All You Need to Know About Zhuhai: the World’s Capital of Printer Consumables27 Jun, 2013
If you are working for a printer consumables company or working in the industry, you will have heard about the Chinese city, Zhuhai, which is well-known as the world’s capital of printer consumables.
Where is Zhuhai?
Located at the southern tip of the Pearl River Delta of Guangdong Province, Zhuhai is one of the five special economic zones in China, geographically close to Hong Kong and Macau. Also, it’s close to many other cities including Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Dongguan—all in the Guangdong Province.
Standing on the west bank of the estuary of the Pearl River to the South China Sea, Zhuhai is a garden-like coastal city with 146 charming islands. In the 1990s, Zhuhai City was selected as one of the top 40 tourist attractions in China. And in 1998, it won the Dubai International Award for “Best Practices to Improve the Living Environment”. Since then, Zhuhai has become known as one of the most livable cities in China.
Zhuhai has unique geographical advantages that maintain its competitiveness as the centre of the GPRD (Greater Pearl River Delta, a new concept introduced by GuangDong Provincial Government). Zhuhai shares the border with Macau on land and with Hong Kong by water. In addition, the bridge to connect Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macau is under construction and to be completed by 2016.
Why is Zhuhai famous?
There are more than 600 printer consumables manufacturers in the Pearl River Delta where Zhuhai is located. The products include remanufactured inkjet cartridges, toner cartridges and ribbons. Raw materials and cartridge components including ink, toner, chips, drums, rollers and blades are also made here.
As the global printer consumables manufacturing centre, Zhuhai is well known as the print consumables capital of the world. Zhuhai owns a comprehensive supply chain and almost any of the raw materials needed by the printer consumables industry are provided locally.
Since 2006, Zhuhai has manufactured and supplied 70% of the world's ribbons, 60% of the world's aftermarket inkjet cartridges and 20% of the world's aftermarket laser toner cartridges. The combined sales are worth more than US$1.3 billion—10% of world sales.
What business incentives are there in Zhuhai?
In order to attract more foreign investment in Zhuhai, the government has introduced some policies that are popular with foreign investors, including reduced tax rates, land purchase concessions and a free trade zone.
Zhuhai offers foreign companies the lower income tax rate of 15% in comparison to 33% for inland regions and 24% for other coastal, economic developing zones. Foreign companies with high volume exports and innovative technologies can also attract a 10% tax rate after the tax concession period. High-Tech manufacturing companies can also benefit from low real-estate prices which vary depending on the scale of the investing company and the location. Companies can enjoy a high level of free trade. And there is no restriction on goods imported from abroad, including Hong Kong and Macau.
Major foreign investors in Zhuhai include BP, EPCOS, Canon, Flextronics, Philips, MTU and Aero Engines Gmh.
