United Stationers Publishes White Paper on Local Purchasing Trends

Deerfield, IL– September 20, 2011 - United Stationers has authored a new white paper now available online.  The paper, entitled “Advantages of Buy Local,” details local purchasing trends by businesses of various sizes and how resellers can leverage these trends to their advantage. It is the second in a series that explores extensive consumer research recently conducted by United to help resellers better understand and respond to current market trends.

“Our research found that almost two-thirds of consumers surveyed preferred to buy from local resellers,” said Carol O’Hern, United Stationers director of research, analytics and sustainability. “From keeping money in the community to working with local suppliers who understand their businesses, the reasons why purchasers prefer to buy locally vary. Understanding the variance behind these decisions is critical in order to successfully appeal to individual preferences and to grow sales as a result.”

The report outlines ways resellers can first identify consumers’ specific perceived advantages of buying locally.   Then resellers can focus on those positive aspects by tailoring their marketing and selling campaigns accordingly.  Getting to know customers and their businesses and making “buy local” a community effort can help resellers improve sales while also boosting the area economy.
