Focus On: MSE

5 Nov, 2013

Founded in Southern California in 1994 by Yoel Wazana, MSE is the largest printer cartridge remanufacturer with all of its production facilities based in the U.S. MSE pioneered the process of Intelligent Re-Engineering which employs patented technologies, proprietary processes, and stringent testing methodologies to provide the markets best alternative to high-cost OEM print consumables.

Every aspect of MSE products, from quality and reliability, to aesthetics and environmental impact is thoroughly analyzed on an ongoing basis. With a staff of 1000-plus, proudly employed in the USA, MSE looks for areas of continuous improvement and creates patented technologies to keep pace with OEM design. The result is a better built, higher quality, more consistent product.

A key technical platform at MSE is known as Advanced Color Technologies (ACT). ACT is the culmination of years of research, development, and applied resources aimed at providing the industry’s first and only OEM-alternative color toner cartridges. Underpinned by ACT, MSE provides the quality vehicle needed to capture the multi-billion-dollar color market share currently owned by the OEM.

A major achievement of ACT is the patented Secondary Cleaning System (SCS). SCS is a brand new critical component added to the existing OEM cartridge. Created by the MSE technical team, SCS is a ground-breaking innovation that exemplifies “Intelligent Re-Engineering.” This component not only addresses -- and practically eliminates -- many of the historical issues, such as streaking, leaking and dirty prints, it actually runs cleaner than an OEM at the end of life. This technology eliminates toner buildup onto the primary charge roller (PCR) and improves overall print quality. SCS is also scalable to various models.

MSE understands that the key to a successful MPS program is a high-quality extended yield cartridge, which is why the company offers its MPS Engineered line of extended yield cartridges. MSE does over $40,000,000 per year in sales to MPS providers. Major OEMs and independent dealers power their MPS business using MSE products. MSE’s consultative approach teaches dealers how to de-commoditize the page in MPS by selling the value of a quality page.

MSE has over 40 patented and patent-pending technologies. These include:

Ultrasonic Welding Technology which eliminates leaking, maintains original cartridge critical gap alignment, and -- most importantly -- maintains the OEM appearance.

Laser-Cutting Technology which offers computer-guided cutting for superior consistency; ensures proper cartridge alignment in the printer, reduces cutting waste by 99 percent, maintains original cartridge tolerances, and increases manufacturing efficiencies.

Cartridge Separation Technology which does not remove plastic or cut through realignment pins of a cartridge, eliminates the need for clips, maintains critical gaps, and also maintains the OEM appearance. All these technologies are scalable to various models.

Protocol & Sustainability

Along with his brother Yoel, CEO Avi Wazana believes that ensuring long-term quality and reliability is the foundation of customer satisfaction. This is why the company follows a 5-step protocol. This 5-step protocol consists of inbound performance tests, 100% post-test printing; a quality control loop; pre-packaged test prints and post pack audit inspection.

Although the aftermarket industry revolves around remanufacturing and recycling, MSE takes it a step further, creating actions to mitigate the company’s carbon footprint. These actions are spearheaded by the ISO 14001 certification which sets an environmental policy predicated on documenting how activities impact the environment and how they can be reduced on an ongoing basis.

The MSE green initiative milestones included reducing cartridge packaging size by 30 percent, using SFI certified packaging, becoming an EPA WasteWise partner, becoming REACH certified, becoming RoHS certified, and creating an air cell bag that reduced packing volume by 80 percent. We were also a CalRecycle Waste Reduction Award Nominee.

At MSE all scrap metals, plastics, paper, and cardboard are locally recycled into everyday consumer items. In 2012 MSE recycled over 2 million cartridges and over 1.5 million pounds of manufacturing scrap.

Industry Certifications

MSE has achieved several important industry certifications. Among these are the ISO 19752, ISO 19798, ISO 9001 and the ASC X9. ISO 19752 is a standardized page yield test for monochrome laser printer cartridges which is utilized by many printer OEMs. The ISO 19798 is a standardized page yield test for color laser printer cartridges and it is also utilized by many printer OEMs. The ISO 9001 is a family of standards for quality management systems, such as documenting procedures, keeping adequate records, and reviewing the overall system to facilitate continuous improvement. The ASC X9 certification promotes standards for the financial services industry, which all MSE MICR cartridges meet. MSE is the only aftermarket manufacturer participating in the X9 committee.

Training & Support

When dealers partner with MSE they receive many benefits, including continuous sales support and training at MSE University, where they learn the basics of effective sales along with advanced techniques relative to our industry. They also receive education on cost-per-page solutions and MPS programs. MSE Partners also qualify for the Co-Op marketing program, in which MSE matches up to 50% of spending on approved advertising and marketing, and up to a maximum of 5% of annual purchases of MSE branded products. MSE recently launched a powerful marketing tool to its dealers that allows them to send videos of critical MSE Sales messages, such as color quality and environmental stewardship. Another benefit of partnering with MSE is the 3-year warranty and brand equity.

MSE has a worldwide reach. With locations in the United States, Canada, the Netherlands, Spain, United Kingdom, Brazil, UAE and Israel, MSE operates more than 260,000 square feet of manufacturing, sales, and distribution facilities. 99 percent of the U.S and Europe is reachable within 1-2 days ground delivery. MSE always promises fast, easy, and convenient delivery. MSE can ship to you or blind drop-ship to your customers at no additional charges. More information at http://www.mse.com
