RTM Announces 2 Day Expo in Chicago in May: How Remanufacturing Will Survive in No. America

13 Jan, 2014

USA/CHINA - January 12, 2014 - According to RTM, more change has taken place in the aftermarket printer cartridge industry in the last 5 years than the whole 30 year history of laser and inkjet printing. Particularly in North America.

Companies, publications and events, iconic with the growth of the industry over three decades have gone. Mergers and acquisitions have seen the number of aftermarket businesses in North America reduced by up to 75%.

The way consumers print their hard copy documents in 2014 has changed too. The global financial crisis, the advent of tablets and mobile printing, and the managed print services business model have had a combined impact. So, fewer printers and print consumables are being purchased than 2 years ago.

The original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are using more and more tactics to thwart the aftermarket industry, whether it be with technical developments, or through legal challenges.  Empty cartridges sold outside of the US can still not be legally brought into the US for remanufacturing, making it difficult for remanufacturers to find sufficient, quality empties for reuse. So many tried to bring new-built compatible cartridges, which do not infringe the OEM patents, into the market, only to find OEMs attempting to block them at the borders.

Will the legitimate aftermarket—those using the “right to repair” doctrine—survive? Or is the industry doomed?

Albert Einstein said,  “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”  The reality is that remanufacturers cannot run their businesses the same way they did 5 years ago, and survive, let alone thrive.

To help cartridge remanufacturers, a two-day conference and expo will be held in Chicago May 13 and 14, 2014.

There is so much change taking place in the printer and copier cartridge remanufacturing industry. Remanufacturers in North America need a venue, a forum, a place to network and get the support they need for the sake of their businesses.

Recycling Times Media expects hundreds to attend the 2-day conference and expo to learn, network, find suppliers and new product information, get legal issues and trends updates, and learn what the OEMs are up to. Venue, speaker, exhibitor and content information will be available soon, but remanufacturers are encouraged to mark their diaries now for May 13 and 14.

Recycling Times would like those involved in the remanufacturing industry to provide feedback as the event comes together.  Some suggested seminar topics are listed on the http://www.irecyclingtimes.com website under the Conference drop-down menu bar.
