Modern Office Methods has been in the office equipment business since 1957. Throughout their 54 years in business, they have experienced steady growth and have adapted to changing technology and varying customer needs. You can count on Modern Office Methods to be in business — even through fluctuations in the economy — to effectively support its customers’ ongoing needs.
In December of 1957, Robert J. McCarthy founded Modern Office Methods as a 3M-copy products dealership in Evansville, IN. At this time, Modern Office Methods represented the Thermo Fax – the only dry copier on the market. The Thermo Fax was about the size of a breadbox and it took four seconds to make one dry copy on a piece of brown paper. At that time the main competitor was carbon paper – not other copiers – and the main sales objection was, “Why would I need a copier? I don’t make copies.” During Modern Office Methods first year in business, it provided customers with enough paper and supplies for them to make 200,000 copies. Today, that figure is over 1 billion.
MOM’s product line has grown to include a full line of copying systems, multifunction devices, color printers, color solutions, document management software, and managed print services from Lanier/Ricoh, Canon, and HP. These manufacturers allow MOM to be vendor agnostic and truly provide the best solution for MOM’s clients because they’re not tied into one specific vendor. Throughout MOM’s years in business, their commitment to customer satisfaction has fueled steady growth.
Most recently this growth has come through two acquisitions. Modern Office Methods acquired two separate Xerox agencies within 60 days, adding 50 new associates to the company. These acquisitions prove the financial stability of the company and their ability to adapt to the changing industry environment. By increasing the size of their company, Modern Office Methods will be able to leverage their buying power with their manufacturers and pass this savings along to their clients.
Today, Modern Office Methods annual revenue tops $39 million; serving thousands of customers and employing over 230 people, 217 of which are Ohio residents. The company has a total of 13 locations in Ohio, including two distribution centers in Cincinnati and Worthington. While many things have changed since 1957, the commitment to serving their customers will always remain constant. In everything that they do and in every product that they represent, this is MOM’s primary goal.
Ready, Set, Win!
In 2010, MOM launched Jump START Your Nonprofit, a contest in which nonprofits enter for a chance to win one of three office technology makeovers worth $20,000. MOM ran the program in three major markets – Cincinnati, Columbus, and Dayton. Their $20,000 Grand Prize winner was the Humane Society of Greater Dayton; the $10,000 First Runner Up was the Children’s Hunger Alliance; and the $5,000 Second Runner Up was the One Way Farm of Fairfield. All of these nonprofits received free products and services from MOM. In 2011, in MOM’s second year of Jump START, they awarded a $20,000 office technology makeover to Mental Health America of Franklin County; the $10,000 First Runner Up was Crayons to Classrooms of Dayton; and the $5,000 Second Runner Up was the Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Cincinnati.
In addition, in August 2012, MOM awarded a $20,000 office technology makeover to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Ohio; the $10,000 First Runner Up was the Literacy Network of Greater Cincinnati; and their $5,000 Second Runner Up was Hannah’s Treasure Chest of Dayton. Voting continued to drive traffic to MOM’s website with over 36,000 votes. The social media interactions skyrocketed with over 120 Tweets regarding Jump START, while 75 Facebook posts from nonprofit supporters were realized. MOM’s top week on Facebook reached 11,270 people!
Before starting their third year of Jump START, MOM was named the 2012 Community Involvement Winner by the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber of Commerce, and was nationally recognized within the office industry with a Perfect Image Award for Outstanding Marketing Campaign, the second from imageSource magazine (2012; 2008), who earlier awarded MOM with both Dealer of the Year and Outstanding Service Program recognition, in 2009. Throughout the years, MOM has garnered many achievement awards and/or recognition from manufacturers, customers, associations, community officials and multiple industry publications, indicating that when working side-by-side with MOM, a useful, collaborative synergy is created that all can be proud of.
