Parts Now! Great Changes in the Making

The reality is, we are printing more than ever
regardless of the forecast of “the paperless office.” What is also true is our
industry is  going through some remarkable changes. And, it’s now apparent
that Parts Now! is pioneering some of those major ones.

Parts Now! was founded in Wisconsin in 1989 with a unique
vision: that there was a need for providing parts for printer repairs.  At
the time, technicians could only buy the $300 assembly when all they needed was
the $2 gear.  So the company started taking those $300 assemblies, breaking
them down into their individual pieces and selling the $2 parts. Today, Parts
Now! has gone from supplying a few parts for HP printers, to becoming the
largest supplier of printer parts for HP, Lexmark, and Canon. In 2006, total
sales were $95.5 million. They attribute that growth to their ability to evolve
with the marketplace, predicting its trends.

Heightening Technology

Skills of Technicians

Vendor-neutral certification of technical skills for
printing and document imaging technicians does not exist. Parts Now! is at the
forefront of the industry working with the Computing Technology Industry
Association (CompTia) to develop such a certification. The participation of
Parts Now! along with leading organizations such as Hewlett-Packard, Lexmark,
Canon, Xerox and Konica Minolta Business Solutions Europe GmbH, assures that
this new credential will cover a solid foundation of technical skills for
professionals working with these technologies. “By establishing a method of
measuring technical competencies, the stage is set for uniform standards of
performance for printing & document imaging technicians which results in greater
productivity & savings for the customer,” said Parts Now! CEO, Jay Spaanem.

Evolution To Business Partner

Long term, growth  in this industry will come from a set of
solutions likely to include software that solves a customer’s problems or
improves their processes. InfoTrends forecasts that the solutions business is
going to be a $1.4 billion industry by 2009 and that the print devices tied to
solutions will reach $8 billion in the U.S. market. From the Gartner Group to
IDC, it’s clear that analysts believe printing costs are the last bastion of
uncontrolled spending in America. Multiple service contracts, multiple
headquarters, countless vendors and uncontrolled purchasing are leading many
companies to ask, “How much am I really spending on  printing?” Parts  Now!  is
taking the lead by offering value-added solutions to answer precisely that

“Essentially, the entire industry must transition to serve
as a business partner not just as a vendor.   Today, companies want
solutions that help them maximize their infrastructure,” stated Kevin Guy, Vice
President of Sales and Marketing.  “Parts Now! will offer solutions
designed to provide service organizations a cost-effective, single point of
contact for managing their customers’ entire print/imaging environment."

Environmentally-Friendly Output

“Social (and business) change is not only possible, it’s mandatory,” said
Spaanem. Parts Now!, long a proponent of reuse, refurbishment and recycling, has
shown a deep-rooted and longstanding commitment to the environment.  In
fact, the company’s efforts were recognized with the awarding of the Wisconsin
Business Friend of the Environment Award.  The award reflects the priority
Parts Now! has put on the environment. The company carries forward that mandate
today by making recycling easier. The company conveniently attaches return
labels for any nonfunctioning parts so that they may be easily returned and
recycled. Their  recently hired reverse logistics expert has earned award
recognition for the positive environmental impact of his projects.

Greater International Expansion

Service level agreements are increasingly more restrictive–
one day turnaround may not be fast enough. Parts Now! recently opened its first
West Coast distribution center in Hayward, California.  The new facility stocks
an inventory of laser printer parts tailored to the industries located along
California’s high tech corridor. "The pressure is on,” said Guy. “End-user
service level requirements have become tightly focused.  It’s critical to be
where your customers are.”

With international growth, there comes the challenge of
serving a multilingual, multi-currency world. Parts Now! just introduced its first web site in French, having acquired Pieces
Express in Quebec (renamed Parts Now! Canada). Parts Now! has seen a increase in international participants at its training
facilities – including Argentina, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, and the Bahamas." We
are a market leader and continue to expand,” said Spaanem. “The printer market
is ripe for consolidation locally, nationally and internationally.”
