Understanding the Future of MPS
There is no question that Managed Print Services (MPS) is the hot topic in the office equipment market today. With double digit growth expected through 2013, there is still a huge revenue opportunity for office equipment dealers. Nevertheless, the concept of managed print services (MPS) is changing. The technology that enables MPS engagements is evolving, business models are shifting, and clients’ needs are becoming more targeted and sophisticated. Savvy service providers will not only take advantage of the opportunities offered today, but will also be thinking beyond MPS to the next big thing—positioning their business for growth and success.
Moving Beyond Managed Print Services
Many organizations asked us this year what we see beyond managed print. At InfoTrends, we see a transformation and convergence happening in the market. Managed Print Services, Managed Services, and Outsourcing are coming together from various industry specific areas and are beginning to unite into an all-encompassing service provider. For instance, we are seeing organizations from the IT Managed Service side moving into the Managed Print Services space.
At the same time, we see Managed Print providers moving into Managed IT Services. We also see some Managed Print vendors offering services in the print production space as well as providing solutions around document workflow and outsourcing. Interestingly, not only are we seeing providers expanding into these adjacent business areas because it helps to further increase their footprint, but we are also seeing that customers are asking their providers for additional services because of their trust, efficiencies, and technical expertise.
Over time, InfoTrends, the worldwide market research and consulting firm, believes a new managed service provider will emerge. The managed service provider of the future will be a managed services solutions provider (MSSP) that delivers multiple managed solutions. This theory is supported by InfoTrends’ most recent forecast data, which identifies solutions and services as the biggest opportunity for growth.
Although solutions and services accounted for only about 25% of the total market in 2008, this share is expected to reach nearly 40% by 2013. Solutions and services typically help streamline business processes and often involve less tangible factors, like time management. Organizations are becoming increasingly aware of the non-tangible costs of doing business, so it is no surprise that solutions and services will account for an ever-growing share of the MPS market in the future. Beyond our current forecast period, InfoTrends believes that solutions and services will overtake supplies as the largest portion of the MPS market. As such, this is where the greatest growth potential exists. The key to becoming a MSSP is to expand the services footprint within the customers’ environments, thus becoming a total solutions and services provider that can resolve customer pain points.
As a highly respected and leading worldwide market research and strategic consulting firm for the digital imaging and document solutions industry, InfoTrends continues to provide research, analysis, forecasts, and advice to help their clients understand changing market trends, identify opportunities, and develop strategies to grow their businesses.
