Dell Dives into Color Workgroup Segment

Dell introduced its flagship color workgroup laser printers to the market on Sept. 1. The largest of the new products is the 5100cn, which has black and white speeds of 35 ppm and color speeds of up to 25 ppm and a price of $999. The company’s new color offerings also include the 3000cn and 3100cn. All three printers are network-ready and include new Dell ColorTrack software, which enables customers to toggle between mono and color printing. In addition, the products include the Dell Printer Web Tool, which allows users to configure the printers on the network, check status or usage information and establish email alerts for paper jams and low toner.

“Color laser printing has been slow to penetrate the business market due to steep acquisition costs and the associated costs of maintenance and consumables for color documents. Dell's release of color laser printers will offer segment-leading total cost of ownership (TCO), giving small and medium businesses an attractive option for high quality, affordable color print solutions,” said Jake Wang of industry analysis firm Current Analysis.

While the 3000cn and 3100cn, which print five ppm in color and cost under $550, are intended for small businesses or home offices, the 5100cn is a robust workgroup printer with color capability for medium to large businesses. The printer has a monthly duty cycle of up to 90,000 pages.
