excelleRx Streamlines Prescription Processes with Westbrook’s Fortis Document Management Software

Branford, CT (May 12, 2009) Westbrook Technologies, developer of Fortis enterprise document management (EDM) software, today announced that excelleRx, a pioneer in the field of medication management for hospice and specialty disease markets, has implemented Fortis to reduce turnaround time for approving, dispensing and shipping prescriptions.

excelleRx uses a consultative approach that goes beyond the role of a traditional pharmacy. Each patient is carefully tracked via a comprehensive medication profile. Before the initial prescription is filled, an excelleRx pharmacist confers with the health care provider and recommends medications and pain management protocols with a proven track record. excelleRx’s prescription management team uses Fortis in conjunction with Xeris, proprietary software that augments and interprets a repository of demographic, disease state, prescription, and economic and clinical outcome data that excelleRx collects.

“Orders that have been faxed or mailed are indexed into the Fortis document repository directly from our line-of-business software,” said Mark Robinson, senior business applications engineer at excelleRx. “Using Fortis cuts down on manual errors and moves our processes along faster making our prescription management team more efficient,” he said. “excelleRx deals with highly-regulated CII narcotics, so minimizing data entry errors is especially important to our business.”

When a prescription is authorized, a notification is sent to Xeris through integration with the Fortis API. “An API trigger sends information to Xeris that says to mark this prescription as hard copy on file,” Robinson said. “The pharmacist views the signed prescription through Fortis Web, reviews and approves it. Then it’s sent to our dispensing system.”

Using Fortis has reduced the turnaround time from when the signed prescription is received to when the medication is dispensed and shipped from an average of four hours to two minutes.

”Fortis can help healthcare organizations achieve operational efficiencies and contain costs,” said Jon Langdon, director of Professional Services at Westbrook. “Fortis also provides multiple levels of security and an audit trail for easier HIPAA compliance.”
