HP, Canon And Xerox Win BLI "Picks" For Wide-Format Products

Hackensack, NJ – Continuing with its Spring 2008 “Pick” awards, Buyers Laboratory Inc. (BLI) announced the winners in the wide-format category today, with accolades going to HP, Canon and Xerox. The world’s leading tester of document imaging products for close to half a century, BLI added wide-format products to its offerings a year ago to address the growing demand for information from the graphics, engineering and corporate markets. Today’s “Picks” are the first awarded by BLI in this increasingly important category. Presented semi-annually, the “Picks” acknowledge the best products tested in their respective categories in a wide range of performance areas. In the case of wide-format products, these include reliability, ease of use, image quality and productivity, among others.

The Spring 2008 Wide-Format “Pick” winners are:

Hewlett-Packard Company
HP Designjet Z6100ps
Outstanding Wide-Format Color Inkjet Multipurpose Printer

Canon U.S.A., Inc.
Canon imagePROGRAF iPF6100
Outstanding Wide-Format Color Inkjet Graphics Printer

Xerox Corporation

HP Designjet Z6100ps Serves Multiple Markets
Its ability to generate outstanding photographic prints on high-quality papers, as well as very good architectural drawings and engineering documents on plain bond, has helped the HP Designjet Z6100ps earn BLI’s Spring 2008 “Pick” for “Outstanding Wide-Format Color Inkjet Multipurpose Printer.” This eight-ink 42-inch model, which is also available in a 60-inch version, also stands out for its ease of use. “From assembly and setup, to its utilities and print drivers and the feedback it provides to end users, the Z6100ps is very user-friendly,” said Joe Tischner, BLI’s wide-format test specialist, noting that the unit’s 575-foot maximum roll length and optional take-up reel allow for long unattended print runs. “This highly reliable unit, which accommodates roll paper only, also offers easy paper loading from the front of the device and effortless color calibration and ICC profile creation using the unit’s built-in spectrophotometer.”

“HP is pleased to be the recipient of the Buyers Lab ‘Pick’ award for ‘Outstanding Wide-Format Color Inkjet Multipurpose Printer’ for the HP Designjet Z6100ps,” said Ben Wolf, Creative Segment Market Manager for HP’s Imaging and Printing Business. “At HP, we strive to offer our customers the highest quality products available in the graphic arts market. We are honored to know that the HP Designjet printer met the standards of the reviewers at Buyers Lab, receiving high marks in color consistency, ease of use and image quality.”

Canon imagePROGRAF iPF6100 Offers Exceptional Output Quality
A superior choice for small graphics workgroups, the Canon imagePROGRAF iPF6100 is BLI’s “Pick” for “Outstanding Wide-Format Color Inkjet Graphics Printer.” This 12-ink 24-inch printer produced outstanding photographic print quality in both color and black-and-white modes, yielding extremely fine detail and smooth gray tones on prints, with none of the bronzing that is a common drawback of black-only output of some competitive products. In addition to its excellent image quality and reliability, the imagePROGRAF iPF6100 offered exceptional ease of use during its lab evaluation. “The printer was very easy to assemble and set up on the network; we were generating prints within 45 minutes,” said Pete Emory, BLI Manager of Lab Testing, noting that the unit also offers very simple roll and sheet media loading. Furthermore, users will find the many software tools, such as the Free Layout nesting function and the media barcode and borderless printing features, helpful in reducing costs.

“The imagePROGRAF iPF6100 large format printer continues Canon’s tradition of stunning colors, detailed prints and archival image quality at astounding print speeds,” said Jim Rosetta, vice president and general manager of Canon U.S.A.’s Imaging Systems Group, “This award from Buyers Lab recognizes the outstanding color graphics capability of the iPF6100, which is especially important for users involved in photography, digital fine art or graphic design.”

Xerox 6204 Offers Exceptional Versatility
BLI’s “Pick” for “Outstanding Wide-Format Monochrome MFP,” the Xerox 6204 demonstrated both excellent reliability and impressive ease of use. The 6204 is distinguished from other MFPs by its integrated 36-inch scanner, which allows for a smaller footprint, although it is also available with an optional standalone 42” color scanner with a faster speed of up to 7.3 inches per second. BLI’s Tischner said, “This MFP does it all and does it all extremely well,” noting in particular its very good print and copy quality, quiet operation, easy-to-navigate control panel and simple supplies replacement. While BLI tested the 6204 as a copier/printer/scanner with the optional FreeFlow Accxes Controller, this versatile model comes standard with a basic print controller and is available in four configurations. It also enables users to upgrade the standard 4-ppm print speed to 5 ppm.
