Technology Of New Sharp AR-M350/AR-M450 And AR-P350/AR-P450 Printer Versions Capture The Power Of The Office Network

Sharp Electronics Corporation is leading a "new era" in document distribution with the introduction of its ambitious AR-M350/AR-M450 multi-tasking systems - along with their AR-P350/AR-P450 printer cousins - thus creating a new, network-compatible definition of what has been known as the office copier.

With such features as direct e-mail capability from the control panel, the Sharp AR-M350 and AR-M450 incorporate a completely new design that accommodates the needs of businesses upgrading their copier/printer systems with advanced networking capability. They integrate the major functions of office equipment - copy, print, fax and scan - into one modular package that can work as a single function or multi-tasker operating simultaneously. Additional advantages include an innovative duplex single-pass feeder and improved finishing capabilities, leading to higher productivity.

Sharp also introduced the AR-P350 and AR-P450, which are printer versions based on the same hardware architecture. The printer versions provide departments with networked printers that control output, offer good finishing capability and handle special print media, such as transparencies, heavy stock, and envelopes.

Additionally, the modular design of Sharp's new systems allows the printer versions to be upgraded into multi-tasking M-version systems.

Sharp's solution is the flexible and efficient AR-M350 and AR-M450 (and the P-series printer versions), which offer copy, print, scan and fax functionality. As document distribution systems transition into networked environments, software must also evolve. Sharp has developed "Image Send" technology to handle simultaneous digital document, printing, high-speed scanning and Super G3 faxing, with high quality output for each function. Sharp's embedded scanning solution allows documents to be easily scanned to e-mail destinations, desktops and FTP sites. The system's architecture enables users to send documents directly to personal workstations - unlike most scan solutions that force users to rely on a server or workstation's default directory.

To make document management more intuitive, Sharp developed the SharpdeskTM software application to integrate documents regardless of how they were created. A flexible and powerful tool that manages documents with "drag and drop" simplicity, Sharpdesk allows documents to be sent directly to desktops, to e-mail destinations, directly to network folders, FTP sites or even desktop applications. Over 200 files can be viewed in their native formats, then scanned directly from the machine to the Sharpdesk desktop to be organized, edited or combined. Sharpdesk also includes a Network Scanner Tool to transparently orchestrate smooth document flow between the system and Windows workstations, allowing scanned images to automatically be routed from desktops to folders, e-mail, or Sharpdesk.

The scanning features of Sharpdesk are easily accessible to end-users via the alphanumeric touch-screen control panel on the AR-M350 and AR-M450. The clear LCD screen is located in front of the machine's document feeder, and is particularly useful for "on the fly" entry of e-mail addresses - saving yet another step in document distribution.

Both the M- and P-series products are shipped with Sharp's Administration Utility Suite, which provides various remote device administration tools that include Printer Status Monitor for systems monitoring at the desktop level, Sharp Printer Administration Utility for remote device management over a network, and Remote Email Diagnostics (RED) for device monitoring by e-mail on both a scheduled and event-driven basis. RED enables machines to place their own service calls while also monitoring supplies and service needs. Working alone or in unison, Administration Utility Suite is designed for users, key operators, IT managers and service providers to keep the device productive while minimizing costs. Sharp developed the AR-M350 and AR-M450 to maximize workflow efficiency with:

- Printing and copying speeds of 35ppm (AR-M350) and 45 ppm (AR-M450)

- Duplex single pass feeder to scan two-sided documents in a single pass;

- Alphanumeric touch-screen control panel allows simultaneous image-send of documents and other multi-tasking workflow management;

- Networked scanning to enable scan-to-email, scan-to-file and scan-to-PDF;

- Maximum duty cycle rating of 200,000;

- Maximum paper capacity of up to 3,100 sheets;

- Optional finishers include Saddle Stitch/Punch, Mailbox, Duplex Module and Small Finisher;

- Standard Memory of 64 MB, upgradeable to 320 MB, and an optional 5GB hard drive;

- Fax modem option of 33.6 Kbps and JBIG compression.
